Spelling Roll a Words

This is a simple game to add to your Spelling Center. Laminate the pages, add dice and dry erase markers and you have a fun, inexpensive spelling activity that keeps your students engaged in meaningful spelling practice while you teach small groups.

Learning New Math

My school is piloting Math in Focus. We started Bar Models last week. We made these anchor charts  as a whole group and found them very useful.

My students then copied the charts in their Math Journals.

During centers,  my students wrote word problems on index cards using written addition and subtraction problems.

.
Later this week, we will read the problems and sort which kind of word problem they are.

New Year/New Math Centers

I have started using centers after my whole group lesson. This allows my early finishers the chance to do something while I work with my late bloomers.

The first center I used this week was Place Value War. I taught it whole group and demonstrated with a partner. I prepared Place Value Charts and used an old Uno deck. A dealer deals one card at a time. The children look at it and decide where to place it. It is really interesting to watch who decides to put the higher numbers where! A few of my more advanced kids opted to not look at the cards until everyone had them. They placed them where they wanted and then flipped them over. They had lots of fun!

Flash Fluency

I found a free fluency program on Pinterest that I am going to try out after Thanksgiving. The name of the program is Flash Fluency. A link to their website is here.

Word Work Rolls

My students can not get enough of my Word Work Rolls. They are nothing fancy but it has quickly become a favorite in my class. The center is simple. Copy the charts and set at your Fluency Center with some dice. Students can partner up or do this activity individually. They roll the die and then read the corresponding list of words as fast as they can.

My first example of the game is here.

Check back for more as I will be creating this game to go along with Reading Street stories in the near future.

Contractions Surgery  -  My students had so much fun conducting surgery this week on their contractions.

Angry Verbs

My Angry Verbs lesson was an absolute hit! First, we played verb charades. Each child acted out an action. We had an absolute blast. Then, we made a verb anchor chart. During centers, I put out Angry Bird coloring pages and the kids added various verbs. I found the coloring pages here.
