Learning New Math

My school is piloting Math in Focus. We started Bar Models last week. We made these anchor charts  as a whole group and found them very useful.

My students then copied the charts in their Math Journals.

During centers,  my students wrote word problems on index cards using written addition and subtraction problems.

.
Later this week, we will read the problems and sort which kind of word problem they are.

New Year/New Math Centers

I have started using centers after my whole group lesson. This allows my early finishers the chance to do something while I work with my late bloomers.

The first center I used this week was Place Value War. I taught it whole group and demonstrated with a partner. I prepared Place Value Charts and used an old Uno deck. A dealer deals one card at a time. The children look at it and decide where to place it. It is really interesting to watch who decides to put the higher numbers where! A few of my more advanced kids opted to not look at the cards until everyone had them. They placed them where they wanted and then flipped them over. They had lots of fun!
